Welcome to the world of feline companionship! As a proud cattery owner, I’ve had the pleasure of caring for countless cats over the years. Cats are delightful creatures that bring joy, warmth, and a touch of mystery to our lives. However, ensuring your furry friend’s well-being requires a few essential steps. Whether you’re a first-time cat owner or a seasoned pet enthusiast, these simple instructions will help you provide the best care for your beloved feline.
- Create a Safe and Stimulating Environment:
Just like us, cats thrive in environments that are both safe and engaging. Set up a designated space for your cat to call home. This could be a cozy corner of a room with their bed, toys, scratching post, and a litter box. Make sure your living space is cat-friendly by removing any hazards like toxic plants or small objects that could be swallowed. - Nourishing Meals:
A well-balanced diet is the cornerstone of good cat care. In our cattery, breeders and kittens get organic ground beef, rabbit, duck and sometimes venison or lamb. They are not on 100% raw diet, so they do get grain free kibbles and canned food as well. There are some veterinarians who support raw diet and some don’t as raw feed diet is still controversial. However, it’s better to do your own research and determine the best food option for your feline friends. But remember, cats are obligated carnivals. For this reason, wheat, soy, corn, potato, rice (so called “filler”) are not good food choices for them. Fresh water is essential. Always have clean fresh water available for all your fur babies. We have 8 water fountains throughout the house. - Regular Veterinary Care:
Just like we need check-ups, cats require regular visits to the vet. Annual vaccinations, parasite control, and dental care are vital to their well-being. Early detection of any health issues can lead to better outcomes, so don’t skip those appointments! - Grooming and Hygiene:
Cats are often meticulous groomers, but they might need a little assistance from time to time. Regular brushing not only helps keep their coat shiny but also strengthens your bond with them. For long-haired breeds, more frequent brushing can prevent mats and tangles. - Social Interaction:
Cats may have a reputation for independence, but they do crave social interactions with humans. Spend quality time with your cat through play, cuddling, and gentle petting. This not only strengthens your relationship but also provides mental and physical stimulation. - Litter Box Etiquette:
Litter box maintenance is essential for both you and your cat’s comfort. Choose a suitable litter and keep the box clean by scooping waste daily and changing the litter regularly. Place the box in a quiet, easily accessible location to encourage consistent use. In our cattery, both pellets and crumping kinds are used. - Environmental Enrichment:
Cats are natural hunters and explorers. Keep them mentally engaged by providing interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and opportunities to explore different spaces in your home. Vertical spaces like cat trees and shelves can mimic their natural climbing instincts. - Safety First:
Cats are curious creatures, so be cautious about open windows, balconies, and toxic substances. Ensure they have proper identification through a collar with a tag and/or a microchip, just in case they decide to embark on an unplanned adventure. Kittens you adopt from us are for IN DOOR ONLY unless you have and enclosed catio that you can let them out under supervision. - Respect Their Space:
Cats have their moods, and sometimes they need a little solitude. Respect their boundaries and let them come to you when they’re ready for attention. - Patience and Love:
Above all, remember that building a strong bond with your cat takes time. Patience and love are key ingredients in successful cat care. Every cat has its own unique personality, so embrace their quirks and enjoy the journey of companionship.
Owning a cat is a rewarding experience that brings immeasurable joy to your life. By following these simple instructions, you’re well on your way to providing a loving and nurturing environment for your furry friend. Just like the cats I care for in my cattery, your beloved companion will thrive under your attentive and caring guidance.
